Antarctic Feature Named for Geosciences Professor
The US Board on Geographic Names officially approved the Geographic name Kennicutt Point following the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (ACAN). The name will be published in future editions of the Antarctic Gazetteer and will also be available through the Nation's official automated geographic name repository, the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) at geonames.usgs.gov.
Dr. Mahlon Kennicutt was cited for his outstanding contribution to the US Antarctic Program as an investigator of marine habitat change during several summer seasons from 1990-2005. Kennicutt's work was located in McMurdo Sound near McMurdo Station and Arthur Harbor in proximity of Palmer Station.
Kennicutt Point, Antarctica (74° 30' S, 165° 29' E) is described is a point of land in the southern part of Wood Bay, Borchgrivnik Coast and is located 8 miles north of Cape Washington.
Kennicutt is a Professor of Oceanography, the Director of Sustainable Development in the Office of the Vice President for Research, and Team Leader of the Sustainable coastal Margins Program. He is currently the US Delegate to the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR).
