Surface Temperature Reconstructions Report

You are invited to participate in an hour-long public briefing on Thursday, June 22, at 11 a.m. EDT for the release of Surface Temperature Reconstructions for the Last 2,000 Years, a new congressionally requested report from the National Academies' National Research Council.

This report describes and assesses the state of scientific efforts to reconstruct surface temperature records for the Earth over approximately the last 2,000 years based on tree rings, boreholes, ice cores, and other "proxy" evidence. It provides policy makers and the scientific community with a critical view of surface temperature reconstructions and how they are evolving, examines issues related to surface temperature reconstructions published in the late 1990s, and provides a sense of how important the understanding of the paleoclimate temperature record is within the overall state of scientific knowledge on global climate change. The report does not make policy recommendations.

Members of the authoring committee - Gerald R. North (Chair), Texas A&M University, College Station; Peter Bloomfield, North Carolina State University, Raleigh; and Kurt M. Cuffey, University of California, Berkeley - will be participating in the briefing.

Visit the National Academies website at 11 a.m. EDT and click on the announcement bar for the audio webcast.
