Hughes ‘51 Named AAPG Outstanding Explorer PDF Print E-mail

Former Geology student Dudley Hughes ‘51 of Jackson, Mississippi, was named the American Association of Petroleum Geologists’ (AAPG) Outstanding Explorer at the association’s annual convention April 20 in San Antonio. Hughes’ accomplishments were further recognized and celebrated at the AAPG Aggie alumni social hosted by the College of Geosciences’ Department of Geology & Geophysics on April 21st. Mr. Hughes, his wife, and their two daughters, joined the Aggies in attendance to observe Aggie Muster. Muster was conducted by three current Geology & Geophysics students and concluded with the Aggie War hymn.

After earning his degree in Geology at Texas A&M, Hughes built a highly successful career in exploration geology. He has always been a strong and loyal supporter of the University and the College of Geosciences. In 1998, Hughes and his wife created the Dudley J. Hughes ’51 Chair in Geology and Geophysics to enhance teaching and research activities in that department. His other support of the College of Geosciences includes contributing to the Robert R. Berg Professorship in Geology and the William R. Bryant Oceanography Chair for Teaching, Research and Mentoring Excellence. He has supported the University by contributing to the Corps of Cadets Enrichment Fund, the Class of ’51 Sul Ross reunion, and the College Excellence Fund.

According to a profile of Hughes published in the April issue of the Association’s magazine EXPLORER, “Hughes, 78, has shown an almost genetic ability to pursue oil and gas plays during the past 50 years. Working primarily in Mississippi and Alabama, he developed concepts that opened 65 new fields."

The EXPLORER profile noted other honors that Hughes has received including outstanding wildcatter awards from the Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association and the All American Wildcatters, lifetime achievement recognition from the Alabama Oil & Gas Board, induction into the Mississippi Business Hall of Fame, and a Distinguished Achievement Medal from Texas A&M.

The AAPG Outstanding Explorer Award is given annually to one active member of the association in recognition of distinguished and outstanding achievement in exploration for petroleum or mineral resources.
