National Science Foundation workshop focuses on diversity within geosciences

The Texas A&M University recently hosted a weeklong workshop to aid in enhancing diversity in the College of Geosciences, particularly in the field of atmospheric sciences. Colleagues at Texas A&M University and system schools, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Texas A&M International University and Texas A&M-Kingsville, collaborated on this project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The workshop took place May 14th through the 20th in College Station at Texas A&M University.

Antarctic Feature Named for Geosciences Professor

The US Board on Geographic Names officially approved the Geographic name Kennicutt Point following the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (ACAN). The name will be published in future editions of the Antarctic Gazetteer and will also be available through the Nation's official automated geographic name repository, the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) at geonames.usgs.gov.

Dr. Robert Stewart

Dr. Robert Stewart, a professor in the physical section of the Texas A&M Department of Oceanography, has a long history of serving on advisory committees. After serving on several important committees at the University of California at San Diego (where he received his PhD), Dr. Stewart previously served as a senator on the Texas A&M University Faculty Senate in 1996. He will return to the TAMU Faculty Senate for the 2006-07 academic year, although is has yet to be determined exactly which positions and committees.

Dr. Robert Bednarz

As a member of the Executive Committee (EC), as a Research Committee chair and a Caucus leader, Dr. Robert Bednarz is deeply involved in the Texas A&M Faculty Senate. The professor of geography has been involved with the Faculty Senate for a number of semesters – after recently finishing a three-year term as a senator, Dr. Bednarz was recently re-elected for a second term representing the College of Geosciences.

Geochemical & Environmental Research Group

The Texas A&M Geochemical & Environmental Research Group, a Center for Excellence as named by the Texas A&M Board of Regents, is a research center for applied geosciences within the College of Geosciences of Texas A&M University. Aside from conducting its own independent research for academia, government and private corporations the facility assists faculty members within the departments in the College of Geosciences with their research.

Dr. Vatche P. Tchakerian

As the academic year closes, students selected to matriculate Texas A&M University in the fall have begun preparing themselves for the challenges and excitement ahead. At the College of Geosciences, the admissions selection process for the 2006-07 academic year is nearly wrapped up, concluding months of rigorous deliberation to narrow a large applicant pool and select a distinguished group of students for the college.
