Olszewski Awarded Schuchert Medal10/23/09 - Thomas Olszewski, an associate professor in the Department of Geology & Geophysics, has been awarded the 2009 Schuchert Medal by the Paleontological Society. The award is given annually to a person under the age of 40 whose work reflects excellence and promise in the science of paleontology. Olszewski received the award October 17th, at the society’s awards ceremony in Portland, Oregon.“It was wonderful to learn about Tom’s student and postdoc days, and to hear him recognize his students and postdoc by name in his acceptance speech, as well as close friends, colleagues, and family,” said Geology & Geophysics Department Head Andreas Kronenberg. Olszewski came to Texas A&M in 2003 after working for two years as a visiting scientist at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History. He received his B.A. in Geology from Franklin and Marshall College, and went on to earn his M.S., also in Geology, from Kansas State University, and Ph.D. in Geosciences from Pennsylvania State University. The Schuchert Medal is named after Paleontologist Charles Schuchert, a founding member of the Paleontological Society who played an important role in the development of paleontology as a scientific discipline.
