Environmental Studies

This track gives students a scientific foundation to make significant environmental policy, legislation, and decision-making concerning the environment. Environmental Studies balances an education in the geosciences (Meteorology, Geology and Geophysics, Oceanography, and Geography) with environmental policy and the social sciences (Economics, Human Geography, Politics, Planning, and Sociology). The program also prepares students for entry into graduate and professional schools, including law, public health, public policy, and urban and regional planning.

Job Outlook

Employment for environmental scientists is expected to flourish in the coming decade. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projected a 28 percent increase in environmental jobs from 2008 to 2018, making environmental sciences one of the nation’s fastest growing industries.
