We believe the geosciences play an important role in the changing world through research education, improved communications, and implementation partnering.

The realm of Geosciences includes the scientific exploration of both planet Earth and its neighbors in space; the structure and processes of atmospheres, oceans, land features, above and below sea and ice cover, and planetary interiors; and human interactions with atmosphere, ocean, and land environments.

Geoscience can also be applied to solve problems on the global scale:

      Issues: Answers:
World population exploding Sustainable development practice
Pressure on natural resources New goesciences knowledge from research
Environmental impacts Application to public policy and planning
Environmental hazards Geoscience education and communication

Academic Degrees and Initiatives

New academic initiatives for undergraduate students in the College of Geoscience include BS degrees offered in Environmental Studies, Environmental Geosciences, Geography with a Geographic Information Science option, and Spatial Sciences. Another recent offering is a minor in Geoinformatics (GIS/GPS/RS).
